| Term | Meaning |

| Pair | Any of the seven two-ball combinations that sum to 16. | 
| Partner ball | The other ball in a pair. | 
| Rogue ball | A ball whose partner is no longer on the table. | 
| Pending partner | The partner ball to any legally pocketed ball that wasn't called. Applies to partner balls to any sunk on the break or pocketed in addition to the called ball. Pending partners may be pocketed at any time, including in the middle of a pair.  | 
| Target ball | The partner ball to the current in-process pair. | 
| At-risk ball | A rogue ball pocketed in the middle of a pair. Points for pocketing at-risk balls will be awarded to the shooter's opponent if the target ball is not legally pocketed in the same turn. | 
| Rogue field | A term indicating that all balls on the table are rogue (with the exception of the eight-ball, if present). |
